Which MacBook have you got?

The plain MacBook name covers several quite different machines. There are the original polycarbonate models, the aluminium unibody, the later polycarbonate unibody, and the slim 12 inch Retina MacBook. We work on all of them, for hardware faults, software trouble and macOS problems alike.

They share very few parts. Tell us the screen size and colour when you get in touch and we will know which one we are dealing with. If yours turns out to be an Air or a Pro, those have their own pages under Mac repair.

Symptoms that bring MacBooks in

  • Won’t turn on, or won’t restart
  • Blank screen at start-up
  • Flickering screen or a failed backlight
  • Cracked or damaged screen
  • Liquid spilt on the keyboard
  • Battery not charging properly
  • Broken charging port
  • Running hot, or running very slowly
  • Keys or trackpad not responding
  • Wi-Fi not working
  • Graphics or logic board failure

The 12 inch model deserves a mention here. It has a single USB-C port that handles charging and everything else, so a damaged port on that MacBook takes the whole machine out of action.

Repairs and upgrades

We replace screens, batteries, keyboards, trackpads and memory, repair liquid damage, and repair or replace logic boards. If macOS has become unstable we can reinstall or upgrade it.

On the 13.3 inch models the hard drive can be replaced or upgraded, which is often the cheapest way to make a slow MacBook usable again. The 12 inch has its storage and memory soldered to the logic board, so on that model the job is repair, not upgrade.

We fit genuine parts wherever possible, and the warranty on the repair covers them. Most MacBook repairs are finished within 24 hours.

Guide prices

A screen replacement is £60 + cost of screen. Overheating repairs run from £135 + VAT to £165 + VAT, and logic board troubleshooting and repair on older models is £285 + VAT. If a forgotten firmware password has locked you out, EFI removal is £135 + VAT. The rest are on our prices page.

Keeping your files safe

Moving to a new Mac? We can transfer your data from the old MacBook to another Mac or to an external drive. If the drive has already failed, stop using the machine and ask about Mac data recovery. The first consultation is free and there is no charge if nothing can be recovered.

You can drop the MacBook in at North End Road, have it collected and returned free of charge, or post it to us.
