QNAP, short for Quality Network Appliance Provider, is a Taiwanese maker of network attached storage (NAS) and network video recorders (NVR). Its range runs from single-drive boxes for the home to rack-mounted storage for large companies. Kensington Computer Repairs recovers data from all of them, however many drives are fitted.
What people keep on a QNAP
Media streaming at home
At home, a QNAP is usually the family media library, sitting quietly in the living room or a bedroom. Its built-in transcoding converts video on the fly, up to 4K, so several people can stream to different devices at once. It works with Windows, Mac, Linux and UNIX machines, so everyone in the house can move their videos and photos onto it and free up space on laptops and phones.
That convenience has a catch. Once the files have been moved off the laptop, the NAS is often holding the only copy.
Surveillance and business storage
In an office the same hardware does heavier work: file sharing, virtualisation, storage management and surveillance. A QNAP network video recorder manages and records from many cameras at once, so a fault can take the CCTV archive with it. We recover that footage as well as ordinary business files.
QNAP sells to everyone from one-person offices to enterprise-scale companies, and much of the range is built for high capacity and speed. The harder a box works and the more disks it holds, the more there is to go wrong.
How QNAP units lose data
The usual signs are files you can no longer open, a unit that looks dead, or one that will not switch on at all. Behind those we tend to find one of these:
- An accidental reformat
- Files deleted or overwritten
- Power failure in the NAS
- A faulty NAS controller
- Several hard drives failing
- Fire or water damage
Most multi-bay QNAPs run their disks as a RAID. A RAID 5 volume carries on working after one disk fails, which is why the first failure is easy to miss and the second arrives as a nasty surprise. Our in-depth NAS guide explains how that happens, and there is more on arrays on the RAID data recovery page.
Leave the disks where they are. If the QNAP offers to initialise the system, create a new volume or rebuild the array, decline. Power the unit down and ring us on 020 3026 0184.
How we recover a QNAP
We start with a free consultation and a firm quote. We work on everything from a simple LAN disk to a corporate storage server. In some cases the files can be recovered remotely over the network, without taking the unit apart, which saves a good deal of time when the data is needed urgently.
It helps if you can tell us the model number, how many bays are filled and what the unit did just before it failed: an error message, a beep, a power cut. Small details like these often point straight at the fault.
Where a drive has failed physically, it is opened only in our ISO Class 5 (Class 100) clean room. The work is completely confidential, which matters when the disks hold camera footage or client records. If we cannot recover the data, you pay nothing.
Guide prices
| Job | Guide price |
|---|---|
| Initial consultation | Free |
| NAS, 2TB (1TB + 1TB), one drive to repair | £450 + VAT |
| QNAP RAID 5 NAS | £650 + VAT |
| RAID 0 | £650 + VAT |
| RAID 5, 6 and 10, depending on the number of drives | £850 + VAT to £1,500 + VAT |
The price we quote is the price we charge. Other jobs are on the data recovery price list.
Getting it to us
Bring the unit to 68A North End Road in West Kensington with the drives still in their bays, or book a free collection from your home or office in central and south London. A rack-mounted QNAP is not something to carry on the Tube, so for larger systems ask about a technician visiting your premises. For anything urgent, a senior technician is on standby 24/7.

The lists below follow QNAP’s own product families. The full lists of model numbers by bay count come after them. We also recover other makes, including Synology.

Questions people ask
My QNAP will not turn on. Is the data gone?
Usually not. A dead unit often means a power or controller fault, and the files are still on the hard drives. Do not move the disks into another unit or a PC. Leave them in their bays and get the whole QNAP to us for a free consultation.
Can you recover CCTV footage from a QNAP NVR?
Yes. We recover recordings from QNAP surveillance and network video recorder systems in the same way as any other files, and the work is completely confidential.
Do you have to take the NAS apart?
Not always. In some cases files can be recovered remotely over the network, which avoids dismantling the unit and saves time. Where a hard drive has failed physically, it needs to come to us and is opened in our clean room.
How much does QNAP recovery cost?
The initial consultation is free. As a guide, a QNAP RAID 5 NAS is £650 + VAT and a 2TB NAS with one drive to repair is £450 + VAT. You get a firm quote first, and there is no charge if the data cannot be recovered.
